Experiencing Life with Zapatistas as Guest to EZLN Escuelita

In August 2013 I was invited to the first Zapatista ‘Escuelita’ workshop with Mexican writer Adriana Malvido and her daughter, Maria Alvarez. For one week, we  attended lectures by Zapatista leaders who explained how their self government system works. We lived in remote communities with families and participated in their daily lives. This unique experience gave me the beginning of an understanding of how for the past 20 years the Zapatistas have tried to build a society autonomous from the Mexican government.
